WHAT is this blue stuff I hear you ask?

This is jewellers wax, a carve-able material used to achieve three dimensional items which may not be achieved with other traditional techniques.

It is used in a process called lost wax casting that has been used for 1000s of years to create jewellery and sculptures.

Here’s how it works:

- create a wax model
- encase that in a mold or investment
- the wax is melted away
- molten metal is poured in to fill the space and create a detailed replica of the original model

It’s a lengthy process but you can achieve some cool results! All of the rings you see in the video are now ready for casting and I can’t wait to show you them!

Experimenting a little with some new equipment.

I’ve had this cute pink sapphire for a while but unfortunately it has a slight black blemish on the surface so Ive never used it. I had a play around with some scrap silver and with no plan in mind created this ring!

These little silver Sixpence coins have been buried underground for years and were discovered with a metal detector! It was my task to create a home for these treasures to be worn and enjoyed.

Up until 1947 these coins were made from solid silver. What a lovely way to display them as opposed to tucked away in a draw to be forgotten once again.

HALLMARKS- what are they and what to they mean??

I just received some of my jewellery back from the London Assay Office and thought it would be a nice opportunity to shed some light onto what those little marks are on your precious jewellery.

By law in the UK, any precious metal pieces to be sold or traded have to be hallmarked. However, items below 1.0g of gold, below 7.78g for silver and below 0.5g for platinum are exempt.

So what do all those little marks mean?

First off we have the sponsors mark. This is a personal mark that you can trace back to the maker of the item. Mine, as you can see, is <CRM> for my name.

Next up we have the metal fineness. These two marks tell you what the metal is (silver,gold ect.) and how many parts pure precious metal it is. This is because most items are made from alloys (a mix of metals). There will be a symbol, in this case a Crown for gold, then a number which tells us what percentage of is it pure gold - in this case it is 9ct gold which is 375 parts per 1000 or 37.5%.

Why use different alloys?

Pure gold is very expensive and also not very usable as it’s a relatively soft metal. Mixing it with other metals gives it durability and also lowers the cost.

The next mark is where the item was hallmarked. In London they use a Leopards Head.

Finally there is a single letter which corresponds to the year it was made. When the full alphabet has run its course, they change the font and start again.

That is it for the traditional UK hallmark but there are many more!

Making the male wedding ring for the loveliest couple.

Using the customers own gold, I melted it down and started processing it into wire. It’s a lengthy process but I have my new rolling mill on my side!

It took me a while to work out a process to get that nice curved but pointy shape but I’m happy with how it turned out. I think they sit so beautifully as a set but also on their own too.

I finished them off with a faceted matte finish to match the engagement ring.

This lovely customer had a ring with a garnet in that she didn’t wear so we took it out and made an organic and textural ring with some added white topaz.

I love making this style and look of jewellery, hopefully get to do more in the future!

I ended up melting the silver by hand instead of in the furnace to rule out any machine error and it turned out perfectly. Which means unfortunately something isn’t quite right with my furnace. Annoying that I have been using it this whole time and blaming myself for it not being successful!

Will try and work out a solution long term but it’s so rewarding not seeing all my hard work go to waste for once.

I’ve got my first little stall coming up this week so have been getting stock together for it. It’s not something I usually do due to the financial investment and also time to make pieces that aren’t guaranteed to sell. So, wish me luck!

After changing my investment powder that allowed for higher temperatures during the burnout cycle and casting there has been a bit of improvement in my casts! The pendant cast fully, 2 rings stopped casting 1/2 way and 1 ring cast about 3/4 so I just soldered in some silver to make it whole.

I still don’t get what else could be going wrong for it not to work. I’ve corrected everything that has been suggested/can find online and it’s just not happening.

Any other ideas from people familiar with the process? I’m using Gold Star XXX and following their burnout cycle perfectly. The soak is at 730°C and casting after 1 hour minimum at 630°C (100°C higher than before). I have superheated the silver to 1050°C. Does anyone use other temperatures? Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone! Thought I would formally introduce myself to my new followers and say hi to all my day one’s.

I am Charlotte, the maker of all the treasures you see on my page. I’ve been on this earth 26 years and have been designing and making jewellery for the past few. I became a mum back in 2022 and am the proudest parent to the most special kid around. I am determined to give her the best life possible so am putting my all into building a business and future for her.

I have always worked random, irrelevant jobs which kept enough money coming in but never fully “filled my cup”. I recently had a big shift in direction and have taken it upon myself to focus as much energy as I can (with having a toddler) into making this my life.

I get so much enjoyment and satisfaction from creating wearable art that brings happiness and unity to people. I am often learning on the job but always creating with passion.

So hard not to get disheartened. This is now my 4th attempt at home casting.

I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I have lost 11 rings among other bits of work. So much love and time put into pieces of potential jewellery just for it to be lost in the process. Not to mention the 2 day process of the cast itself.

I injected a few of these rings and have put them on a sprue tree and invested it. They are in the kiln overnight and I will try casting tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will work this time!

Here I am using a 2 part “liquid glass” silicon. It was pretty messy and there’s a lot of improvement needed in my process. It takes 24 hours to cure so let’s see if it worked tomorrow!
